I love to get dressed up and have a nice dinner, but sometimes I want the benefits of the nice atmosphere and great food without having to be too fancy. I’ve eaten at Michael Mina’s Bourbon Steak at the Four Seasons in Georgetown a few times, but I am a particular fan of the lounge area and their geniously crafted burger bar. The space is contemporary but sophisticated and offers a wide range of wines and spirits as well as a dangerously delicious bar mix including hot pretzels, peanuts, and an addicting spice blend. However, perhaps the best part about the bar area at Bourbon Steak is the burger menu which includes six mouth-watering options that offer a prime steak burger, a turkey burger, a korean barbeque salmon burger, and my favorite, the vegetarian falafel burger.
Let me start by saying that I am not a vegetarian and I really enjoy a delicious beef burger every once in awhile, but there is something about this falafel burger that keeps me coming back. As mentioned on the menu, it is apparently a recipe of Michael’s mother that includes tahini sauce and tomato confit. The consistency of the burger is crispy on the outside to hold itself together and quite soft and smushy on the inside creating a great mix of textures in your mouth. It is a wonderfully satisfying meal and fills you up in the same way a regular burger would. I also had a taste of the salmon burger this time which was slightly spicy with kimchi, jalapenos, shredded carrots, and a special BBQ sauce. I enjoyed it very much, but still think the falafel burger wins. Finally, they offer the sides a la carte which are a bit indulgent, but if you are really up for the full burger experience, I recommend the trio of duck fat fries which includes simple salt, old bay, and parmesan fries with three dipping sauces.
Bourbon Steak’s burger bar provides the quintessential Washington feel as it is a place to see and be seen, and a place to dine on a wonderfully sophisticated version of the classic burger. And, when the time is right for a special occasion, make a reservation at Bourbon Steak for the full restaurant experience and with the first bite of the buttery truffled rolls served in the cast iron skillet you’ll be one happy camper.
