I had a chance to tour the brand new, but not yet open, Bayou Bakery in Courthouse this weekend which is located in the former Camille’s Sidewalk Cafe space. If Chef David Guas shows the same excitement, passion, and creativity with the food at Bayou Bakery as he did for the design and construction of his new New Orleans themed bakery, we’re all in for treat.
After discussing the concept and the menu extensively with the chef, I fully expect Bayou Bakery to not only be a popular neighborhood spot, but a destination since there is nothing else like it in Washington, DC.
Chef Guas took a hands-on approach to the design of his space so when you’re admiring the decor in the restaurant there is a good chance that David or one of his family members had a part in it. The beautiful tables in the pictures below, the shutters, the state of Louisiana carved out of salvaged wood, and even the coat rack are all handcrafted by David. The whimsical New Orleans artwork was made by his cousin. The restaurant is filled with nice touches throughout including the women’s bathroom which is covered with southern dessert recipes to remind you that girls are sweet. Also, instead of getting a number with your order you will get a card with the name and pronunciation of a parish.
They plan to open by next Monday, November 15th. Once we get a chance to try their New Orleans cuisine we will report back. Update: In the meantime Y&H has more information on their menu options.

I feel like I have been waiting on this place forEVER! At the crossroads of bakery and “all-things-French,” I fully expect this to be one of my new fave hangouts. Thanks for the sneak peek!
