Valentine’s Day Round Up

Valentine’s Day is rapidly approaching and I know a lot of you are freaking out about making plans. For those of you that don’t want to cook for Valentine’s Day we have included a list of all of the Valentine’s Day happenings around DC. When we hear about more, we’ll add to the list so keep checking back. Leave a note in the comments with your Valentine’s Day plan.

Fun fact, did you know that February 13th is Mistress Day?  If you’re making reservations for the 13th and the 14th you’ve got some work to do. If you’re not dining out with your mistress on the 13th, should be a fun night for people watching.

  • Z-Burger is offering a buy one get one free deal with heart shaped burgers…only if you kiss your date at the register on February 13-14th.
  • Luxury meets romance this Valentine’s Day as Proof serves a special four-course tasting menu celebrating the season of love. Maine lobster, foie gras, truffles, and beef tenderloin all make an appearance on Executive Chef Haidar Karoum’s luscious menu which will be served alongside Proof’s regular a la carte menu on Monday, February 14, 2011. Priced at $85 per person, not inclusive of tax and gratuity
  • Georgetown is hosting a pretty awesome neighborhood-wide Love Potion promotion from February 11-14. 19 neighborhood restaurants are offering their own signature “Love Potion” cocktail, at a special V-Day price of 2 for $14. Try the Cinn City at Bourbon Steak, Cupid’s Arrow at Mie N Yu or the Menage a Trois at Paolo’s.
  • Cafe Saint-Ex, a charming  Mid-City neighborhood dining spot is setting the stage for a romantic evening and accepting reservations for the first time ever, only on Valentine’s Day. The restaurant will serve a four-course prix fixe menu including dishes like Saffron Tea Oyster Shooter, Humboldt Fog with smoked mushrooms, pine nuts and pumpkin jam, Slow Roasted Lamb with housemade tagliatelle, parsnips, and pomegranate, Pan Roasted Lobster with toasted coconut risotto, and curry nage, and the sweet Milk Chocolate Banana Bomb with orange rum anglaise and hazelnuts. The special Valentine’s Day menu is available for $55/person, or $75/person with beverage pairings.   • Neighboring 14th St hotspot Bar Pilar is going in a different direction on the sappy holiday and hosting an Anti-Valentine’s Day Party full of Bitter Cocktails and Sour Desserts. While venting about the cliché holiday, guests can drown their sorrows in Bitter Cocktails like The Bitter End ($10) with Jim Beam Whiskey, Amaro Italian Herbal Liqueur, Domaine de Canton Ginger Liqueur, and fresh lime juice with an orange twist, the Hater ($9) with Segura Viudas Aria Cava and Campari, or The Pierced Heart ($12) with Remy Brandy, Jagermeister, St. Elizabeth Allspice Dram and orange-clove syrup. Those whose relationships have gone sour can nibble on Sour Desserts like their homemade Lemon Curd Tart or Buttermilk Panna Cotta with sour cherry compote. Bar Pilar is located at 1833 14th St. NW.
  • Georgia Brown’s is pairing sexy jazz with a desire-inducing prix fixe Aphrodisiac Menu on Valentine’s Day. Diners can enjoy the smooth sounds of live jazz while nibbling on seductive dishes such as the Fried Green Tomato with scallion mayonnaise, tomato relish and tomato marmaladeLobster Mashed Potatoes with truffle mashed potatoes, brandied lobster Nage, yellow corn, mache and potato gaufrettes, and Banana Pudding Trifle with buttermilk pound cake, vanilla bean pudding, caramelized banana and whipped cream. Guests can enjoy wine and champagne pairings or sip a decadent Crushed ”Red Velvet” Martiniwith Crème de Cocoa, Grenadine, vanilla infused vodka, cream and cake crumbs.   • For a little romance, guests can celebrate Valentine’s Day at Rosa Mexicano with sweet and savory a la carte menu specials for your sweetheart.  Rosa Mexicano has created a cocoa-inspired menu of appetizers, entrees, desserts, and drinks featuring white, dark, milk, and Mexican chocolate.   Couples can toast with Spiced Chocolate Agua Frescas or a Chocolate Cocktail and share menu items like Coffee and Chocolate Rubbed Sirloin for Two and a decadent Chocolate Dessert Trio.
  • Cuba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar, located at 801A 9th Street, NW (9th & H Streets), will offer an Everlasting Lovers’ Brunch featuring aphrodisiac ingredients with a Cuban twist.  Guests choosing the “unlimited” option priced at $30 per person, may indulge in as many dishes they can eat from the 26-item brunch menu.  All items on the brunch menu will also be available a la carte with prices ranging from $5 to $11.  Standouts include Cuban Chocolate Waffle served with chunky banana-sun dried cherry-vanilla syrup; Jumbo Lump Crabmeat and Potato Cake with poached egg, avocado mash and a tomato-hollandaise sauce; Two Cornmeal Pancakes served with bacon, Cuba Libre’s five-year rum-molasses syrup and mango butter; Fluffy Two Egg Omelet filled with chorizo sausage, roasted potatoes, sour cream and Monterey Jack cheese,as well as Truffle and Citrus Marinated Grilled Baby Octopus with Haitian eggplant salad.   The Everlasting Lovers’ Brunch will be available on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the month of February from 11 AM to 3 PM.  The unlimited option is only available when ordered by all guests at the table. “To-go” bags will not be offered.   During the month of February Cuba Libre’s lunch menu will not be available on Saturdays and Sundays.   • AGAINN, located at 1099 New York Avenue, NW, will feature an anti-Valentine’s Day menu for singles with a three-course menu inspired by the cuisine of the British Isles.  Priced at $40 per person (beverages, tax and gratuity not included) this special offering will be available from 6 PM to 9 PM from February 11 thru 17, 2011.  Prepared by Executive Chef Wesley Morton, the menu begins with a choice of Soup of theDay or House-made Black Pudding followed by a choice of Pan Seared Loch Duart Salmon or Mixed Grill of Tamworth Pork.  For the perfect ending, guests will choose from between Spotted Dick or Stout Ice Cream.  A complete a la carte menu will also be available.  Additionally, on Monday, February 14th the restaurant will play non-romantic movies such as The Break Up, He’s Just Not That Into You and So I Married An Axe Murderer will play on their TVs screens.  Guests will also receive heart-shaped candies with anti-love sayings on their for the table.   • Hank’s Oyster Bar is always a favorite with their oyster sampler available at both the Dupont Circle and Old Town Alexandria locations. Priced at $9, the sampler includes two shooters, two fried oysters and two freshly shucked oysters and is available Monday and Tuesday evenings throughout the month of February in the district.  In Old Town Alexandria, the oyster sampler is available Tuesdays only.  Hank’s Oyster Bar is located at 1624 Q Street NW in Washington, DC and 1026 King Street, Alexandria VA.  Fore more information visitwww.hanksrestaurants.com.
  • Situated in the hip 14th Street neighborhood at 1825 14th Street, NW, Masa 14 will be offering five-course Valentine’s Day menu ideal for sharing highlighting the restaurant’s signature Latin-Asian fare.  Priced at $120 per couple, this special menu includes an amuse, a choice of six plates, dessert to share and a bottle of Gruet Blanc de Noir or Gruet Rose to share at the table.  Specials available for the evening include Grilled Lobster with mushroom tempura, truffle custard tart and salsa verde; Charred Bison Tataki served with plantain croutons, chipotle mayo, dried shrimp & green papaya salad; Grilled Smoked Beef Brisket served with Chinese sausage, braised daikon, bone marrow custard, rice cakes and a red miso guajillo chile broth as well as Papas Rellenos served with truffle custard, winter vegetable ragout and sauce pipian.  For those who wish to skip the crowds, Masa 14 will be offering a “Cupid’s Foreplay” dinner on Sunday, February 13th.  The menu will be the same as on Cupid’s big day, but available at a discounted price of $105 per couple.  For reservations or additional information please call (202) 328-1414 or visit www.masa14.com.
  • Situated just a block from the White House, the Oval Room, located at 800 Connecticut Avenue, NW, is offering a three-course menu priced at $85 per person (tax or gratuity not included).  Chef Tony Conte has prepared a special Valentine’s Day tasting menu with uniquely inspired dishes such as Hawaiian Big Eye Tuna with wasabi ice, candied cherry leaf and ginger jelly; Celery Root Custard with caramelized white chocolate and sea urchin; Kazu Marinated Duck with confit tatar tots, turnips and honey quince as well as Spinach-Ricotta Dumplings with wild mushroom sauce and shaved black truffle.   • The landmark 701 Restaurant, located at 701 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, will be offering a $55 per person three-course menu in addition to an a la carte menu on Saturday, February 12th and Sunday, February 13th.  Then, on Monday, February 14th, Chef Ed Witt will offer couples an expanded $85 three-course tasting menu with an amuse followed by a choice of appetizer, entrée and dessert.  Entrée standouts off the expanded three-course menu include Shenandoah Lamb Rack and Loin with pomegranate, celery root, and trumpet royal mushroom; Black Bass with malpeque oyster risotto, Champagne and caviar sauce; House Made Garganelli with ricotta and shaved black trufflesas well as Pheasant with potato hash, blue cheese and beet sauce.  For the perfect ending, guests can choose from Almond Macaroons; Milk Chocolate Chestnut Bar or Chocolate Truffle Cake prepared by newly appointed Pastry Chef Melanie Parker.  Valet parking is available for $8.  For reservations or additional information please call (202) 393-0701 or visit www.701restaurant.com.
  • Just north of Washington in Bethesda Row, Redwood at 7121 Bethesda Lane, Bethesda, MD, is offering a romantic three-course menu where couples can take pleasure in a tantalizing choice of appetizer, entrée and dessert.  Seating is available from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. for $59 per person (tax and gratuity not included).  Menu highlights include Sea Scallops with oxtail risotto, harissa and salsa verde; Terrine of Game and Foie Gras with quince relish, coffee, pepper and toasts; Lobster Hot Pot with a Maine lobster broth, egg noodles and condiments as well as Filet Mignon with sautéed foie gras and truffle sauce.  A custom wine pairing will also be available for $29 per person.  Additionally, Redwood will offer couples live Jazz music courtesy of George Oakley Trio from 6 PM to 9 PM, followed by a performance by the Latin group Trio Caliente from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. on this romantic night.  For reservations or additional information please call (301) 656-5515 or visit www.redwoodbethesda.com.
  • BlackSalt Fish Market & Restaurant, located at 4883 MacArthur Boulevard, NW, is offering a full Valentine’s Day feast to go!  Food orders can be made from 10 AM to 7 PM daily through Friday, February 11th and all pick-ups will be scheduled for Monday, February 14th. The “Cupid’s Choice” Valentine’s Day menu includes a three-course dinner for two with choice of appetizer, entrée and dessert for $95. Guests can select mouthwatering dishes such as Roasted Squash Bisque with balsamic and spiced mascarpone; Hickory Grilled Salmon with red mole, and plantain chips; Split and Stuffed Maine Lobster with forest mushrooms, lobster knuckle, cornbread and shellfish cream as well asWood Grilled Boneless Ribeye with twice baked potato, smoked bacon and caramelized onion jus.  An a la carte menu is also available for guests wishing to choose the perfect accompaniment to their Valentine’s Day meal.  The lineup includes Half Shell Oysters and Clams from the East and West Coast; 1 ¼ pound Live Maine Lobsters as well as Imported and Domestic Caviar.  Prices for caviar range from $9 to $225 per ounce.  All cancelations require 48 hours notice for full refunds.  For more information please call (202) 342-9101 or visitwww.blacksaltrestaurant.com.
  • Valentine’s Day Prix-Fixe Menu at For Valentine’s Day at Morton’s The Steakhouse. Morton’s is offering couples the choice of ordering a la carte or enjoying a three-course feast for two.  Included are choice of appetizer, a selection of entrees including Morton’s USDA Prime cuts of steak, as well as sides to share, and decadent desserts. Morton’s is excited to add to the season of love a new cocktail called “The Red Velvet.”  It is an intriguing blend of Lindemans Raspberry Lambic, Prosecco, Chambord, and fresh raspberries.  Luscious and sweet, it complements a perfect dinner of romance.   • Roof Terrace Restaurant, located atop the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, adds a little kick to couples’ Valentine’s Day celebrations with a prix-fixe, three-course dinner full of spice.  Executive Chef Joe Gurner has invigorated the restaurant’s classic bistro fare with dishes designed to awaken the senses, like Butternut Squash Apple Cider Bisque with candied pecans, maple crème fraiche and sage and Braised Lamb Shank with grilled rapini, toasted pine nuts and citrus gremolata.  In addition, Executive Pastry Chef Ben McCormick will offer a mix of indulgent delights, including a Dessert Tasting with salted caramel cheese cake, champagne crème brulee and white chocolate-raspberry mousse.   Roof Terrace’s floor to ceiling windows provide a stunning skyline view that tops off a romantic evening for two. $50 per person.
