H &pizza = H &awesome

One thing you will hear over and over again in the D.C. food scene is a lot of complaining about the lack of good pizza. Unlike New York, you can’t just stop in on any corner to pick up a slice. And for the places that do offer this novelty, I guarantee the pizza is not that good. We have 2 Amy’s and Pizzeria Paradiso for Neopolitan pizza, Ledo Pizza is a regional institution with their original cracker-like crust, sweet sauce, and squared pieces of pizza, and Spike Mendelsohn’s We, the Pizza is satisfying if you do have a hankering for a New York slice. However, there are not enough options for a city of our size, and there are very few high-quality options that serve the late night crowd.

H &pizza is located on 1118 H Street NE.

In comes H &pizza which has moved into the former Birdland spot directly next to the original Taylor Gourmet on H Street NE, and this place is about to take the area by storm. A small and sleek space invites you in, and delicious offerings, a fantastic price, and hours until 3AM on the weekends will make you not want to leave. The concept is simple: a modern pizza parlor, fresh ingredients, and customized ordering based on an assembly line style. The menu offers many choices such as three different types of dough including traditional, whole wheat, and multigrain, over six sauces such as spicy tomato or mushroom truffle, and six different cheeses with housemade mozzarella as one of the options. To build your own pizza which is somewhat like a flatbread by picking a dough, sauce, and cheese, the entire cost is $6.82! And if you’d like to add unlimited toppings it is still only $8.64! It’s the best deal you are going to find around town and I guarantee your tummy will be happy with any combination you choose to eat at H &pizza.

Additionally, H &pizza offers nine specialty pizzas that they have already designed for those of you who are less creative and need some inspiration. I was able to sample all of them at the opening party last week and there was nothing I did not like. However, the standouts for me were as follows:

  • Gnarlic: Garlic puree, housemade mozzarella, ricotta, asiago, and garlic oil. This is H &pizza’s white pie and it sure is decadent. The garlic puree acts as the sauce and is so much sweeter and smoother than chunks of garlic thrown on top of the pizza. This is a comforting choice and one that is sure to please.
  • Moonstruck: Mushroom truffle, goat cheeses, mushrooms, fig marsala, red pepper chile oil, crushed black pepper. This one speaks for itself. High-end indulgent ingredients, need I say more?
  • Maverick: Classic tomato, housemade mozzarella, pepperoni, hot sausage, smoked bacon, soppressata, parmesan reggiano, oregano oil. Bring on the meat! This pizza has the traditional vibe going and has a hint of spice with all of the delicious meats on top.

H &pizza is the brainchild of owners Michael Lastoria and Steve Salis who are excited to bring an affordable and delicious option to the District. From what I can see (and taste) so far, H &pizza is going to knock it out of the park.
