There’s a new spot coming to Metro Center in early 2013, and that spot is called Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken. Yes, you heard me right: doughnuts AND fried chicken, living together, in harmony. Pastry Chef Jason Gehring is running the kitchen at the new outpost and will be serving traditional buttermilk fried chicken with an amazing variety of doughnut flavors such as PB&J, Maple Bacon, Espresso and Triple Chocolate to name a few. Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken will not be open until January, but they kindly stopped by the Twitter offices in DC (my day job), to deliver us a preview of what’s in store for us next year. All I can say is… wow. These doughnuts are no joke. Handcrafted with love, filled with sugar and deliciousness, and sure to please anyone with a sweet tooth. The square shaped doughnuts have filling, while the round are more classic with a moist and chewy dough on the inside. Here’s a sneak peek:
I am slowly but surely making my way through this box but so far my favorite is the Butter Pecan. So fluffy with a rich glaze on the outside and crumbled bits of walnuts on top. The Mocha is super rich stuffed with chocolate custard, and the Brooklyn Blackout is a chocolate lover’s dream! For those who cannot wait until January for the outpost to open, they will be holding a pop-up at Chinatown Coffee on December 20th and 21st starting at 8AM until they run out. Flavors will include Banana Nut, Gingerbread, Grapefruit, Chocolate Glazed, Mocha and more. Go get em’!
