We had never taken the ride out to Lewes, Delaware which is about 10-15 minutes from the Dewey Beach area. It’s an easy ride, and after driving through a quiet area you stumble upon a quaint and small main strip with adorable shops, and some great restaurants such as Agave, The Buttery, Kindle, and A Touch of Italy. We decided to try A Touch of Italy on this trip because we had heard great reviews of this small Italian shop with a restaurant inside. The tables are situated between meat, cheese, and prepared foods counters, and the vibe is super casual. The menu is filled with classic Italian dishes and we went a little crazy with the ordering. We started by sharing the eggplant rollatini which was nicely crisped on the edges and topped with cheese and a homemade tomato sauce. In addition, we enjoyed the gnocchi quattro formaggio which was a small but rich dish of delicious potato gnocchi and gorgonzola, fontina, ricotta, pecorino romano, and breadcrumbs. It was a divine little plate, but definitely something we were glad we split.
For the remainder of the meal we each decided to order a different pasta so we could try different options and eat off of each other’s plates. Between the three of us we had the tagliolini bolognese, the orecchiette with sausage and broccoli rabe, and the linguine with white clam sauce. All were total hits, and there was next to nothing left at the end of our meal. I particularly loved the linguine with white clam sauce which included whole and chopped little neck clams and a nice amount of garlic. A Touch of Italy is located at 101 2nd Street, Lewes, DE, 19958. There is also a Rehoboth location at 33A Baltimore Avenue which is only open for lunch and takeaway.
Most people are very surprised to hear there is an upscale and high quality sushi restaurant located in downtown Rehoboth Beach. It’s completely different from most of the pubs and bars located along the strip, but both the food and the ambiance do not disappoint at The Cultured Pearl (even for D.C. snobs like us). We went over on a Tuesday night and there was live jazz music which was nice. We ordered a mess of sushi, and all of the rolls were pretty fresh and enjoyable. Some notable ones were the crunchy roll with eel, avocado, tempura bits, and eel sauce as well as the tempura shrimp roll, the rainbow roll, and the Island Roll with mango, avocado, and green apple draped with salmon and scallop.
There is a great outdoor space with tons of seating, and there is a koi pond as well which creates a nice atmosphere. It is definitely worth dining at if you are in the area. The Cultured Pearl is located at 301 Rehoboth Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, DE, 19971.
I was so impressed with the amazing selections the farmers market had to offer this week. So much fresh produce, cheese, salsas, breads, meats, and more. One of my favorite stands was Pappardelle’s Pasta which only sells in markets and offered amazing pasta selections such as basil garlic sea shells, lemon mint penne, and a variety of stuffed raviolis. Additionally, they sell all sorts of sauces such as pestos, vodka sauce, and even a thai peanut sauce. I bought a bunch of the dried pasta shapes and can’t wait to try them. The farmers market also had live music, and was situated right on Grove Park which allowed the families to shop while their kids played nearby.
This is definitely worth a visit. The market is from noon-4PM on Tuesdays.
We liked Lewes so much that we decided to go back for the afternoon to poke around the shops on a rainy day. We stepped into Agave and very quickly realized this was a pretty legit spot. We grabbed stools at the bar, and immediately ordered margaritas. The menu had great options, but I was so pleased with my avocado and mango salad that I topped with filet. It came with pinenuts and a crumbled goat cheese, and was finished with a light vinaigrette that tied the whole dish together.
In addition to the wonderful salads, we also enjoyed queso fundido with chorizo, and empanadas. Agave was packed even in the late afternoon between lunch and dinnertime, so I imagine it gets even more crowded in the evenings. Add it to the list. Agave is located at 137 2nd Street, Lewes, DE, 19958.
OK, so we went back to Lewes again. This time we snagged a delightfully crisp bottle of Eugene Wine Cellars Pinot Gris, grabbed some stools out front of the narrow summer house, and enjoyed our beautiful view. In addition to having a great wine selection, Half Full has an amazing menu full of delicious pizzas with a great mix of ingredients. I sprung for the Smokin’ Margarita with roasted garlic sauce, oven roasted tomatoes, smoked mozzarella and fresh basil. It was perfect.
The place couldn’t be cuter, and they had a great beer selection as well. It opens at 4PM every day and is a great place to stop by for dine in, take out, or even just to enjoy a drink. Half Full is located at 113 W Market Street, Lewes, DE, 19958.
Owned by the same folks behind Half Full, how could you not dig a place whose mantra is “eat, drink, glow”? It has a great little outdoor patio and we bounced over here after some time at Half Full to enjoy drinks and some small bites. The cocktails and wine hit the spot, and we enjoyed a lovely macaroni and cheese that was baked to bubbly and crisped perfection. We also enjoyed mussels, a cheese plate, and the deconstructed calamari.
Kindle is definitely a cute place that is worth the stop. Next time I plan to stick around for dessert because the menu included dishes like lemon chess pie and peach crisp which would be an awesome way to end a great meal in Lewes. Kindle is located at 111 Bank Street, Lewes, DE 19958.
While it isn’t a fancy or high-end establishment, we enjoyed nachos and fish tacos at Nalu Surf Bar in Dewey, and we had a decent lunch at Hobo’s in Rehoboth (slow service, but good food with local and seasonal ingredients). I also recommend checking out The Point Coffee House and Bake Shoppe in Rehoboth for coffee, bagels, stuffed croissants, and all sorts of delicious treats. Other notable spots include Henlopen City Oyster House, Salt Air, and Greenman Juice Bar all in Rehoboth Beach.
