Weekend Eats

by Jenna on April 22, 2013

This weekend I tried The Red Hen which just opened last week in Bloomingdale on 1st and Seaton Place NW. My friends and I loved the space, and really enjoyed our meal at this new Italian-American outpost. The interior is warm and inviting, and it appears it is going to be a great neighborhood gathering place. Some highlights were the smoked ricotta crostini with truffle honey, and I really enjoyed the rigatoni with fennel sausage ragu. The pasta is made in-house and the portion sizes were nice (not oversized), making it easy to share other bites for the table with others.

The gnocchi with hazelnut pesto was also tasty, and I loved the touch of breadcrumbs sprinkled atop of the black linguini with clams. The cacio e pepe was very good, but I wanted it to be a bit saucier. I also prefer that preparation with a spaghetti or longer noodle rather than the fusilli pasta it was served with. We also indulged in the pine nut tart for dessert which I highly recommend. All in all, a nice meal. The Red Hen is located at 1822 1st Street NW, Washington, DC 20001. On Twitter: @RedHenDC.

Many of you have noticed I’ve been to Le Diplomate more times than one can count in the two weeks that it has been open. After a delicious dinner and lunch, I also got the chance to check out the brunch dishes this weekend which did not disappoint in the least! The Quiche Lorraine was divine- a huge chunk of egg pie with onions, bacon, and cheese with an incredibly flaky crust. The french toast made of brioche was served with apples and hazelnut butter. The dish was really wonderful, and was just sweet enough to not need the syrup. Finally, we tried the spinach omelette with goat cheese which was light and fluffy served with crispy Lyonnaise potatoes. Another home run for Le Diplomate. Le Diplomate is located at 1601 14th Street NW, Washington, DC 20005. On Twitter: @StarrRestaurant.

Last but not least, I indulged in an excellent new dish at my favorite neighborhood restaurant Posto. It’s ramps season, and I really love those little spring onions so I ordered the gnocchi with stinging nettles, ramps, and sundried tomatoes. It was fantastic and I highly recommend you go check it out. Posto is located at 1515 14th Street NW, Washington, DC 20005. On Twitter: @RistorantePOSTO.

I’m off to San Francisco and Portland this week and I’m looking forward to meals at Frances, Pok Pok, and Le Pigeon. More food tales to come soon, have a great week!

Le Diplomate

by Jenna on April 18, 2013

For years I have walked by the old abandoned shirt laundry building on the corner of 14th and Q Streets NW and always imagined what an incredible space it could be should someone have the ability to dig in and flip it. Many restaurants have tried, and most have pulled out after a quick estimate of what it would cost to drain the fluids below the building, along with the many other projects necessary to get the location up to snuff. In comes Stephen Starr, Philadelphia restaurateur who had a vision, and felt that this space was something special. As a resident of the Logan Circle neighborhood, we have been anxiously awaiting the opening of Le Diplomate since it was announced back in July of 2011, and I am thrilled to welcome it to the Washington, D.C. dining scene.

Le Diplomate

Many of you know I just returned from a fantastic trip to Paris in December. I ate and drank my way through the city, and have been longing for the days of leisurely lunches with rosé champagne. Now I have a little taste of Paris just one block from my apartment. Le Diplomate is absolutely stunning at first glance, and it’s unlike anything else we have in Washington. The restaurant is massive, yet provides so many opportunities for the diner: indoor seating with a classic brasserie feel, the glass covered enclosed terrace which evokes a conservatory, and the expansive outdoor patio along Q Street which is already packed to the brim in April, and is sure to be one of the most sought after dining locations all summer long.

As soon as I entered Le Diplomate I checked in with the hostess and then moved closer to the bar area as my friends and I waited for our table. Without even stepping up to the bar counter, a waiter approached us and asked if we would like to order drinks, and quickly presented us with menus. I was impressed with how attentive the staff was, and within minutes we were toasting to a great night out at D.C.’s newest restaurant. Shortly after we were seated, we got serious. My friends don’t mess around with food and we quickly ordered the tuna carpaccio, macaroni au gratin, mushroom tart, the frisee salad, and the warm shrimp salad.

Le Diplomate

I hereby declare the warm shrimp salad as my new “go-to” dish. The light lemon and butter sauce is divine, the greens were topped with a lovely dressing, and the dish had slices of avocado which added a creamy mix to each bite. The crust on the mushroom tart was so flaky, I had pieces of crust all over my hands as I was eating the dish (exactly what you want, similar to the crust of a croissant). The macaroni was rich and delicious, and the frisee salad with duck confit, potatoes, and a poached egg was decadent and the perfect start to a delicious French meal.

We were already feeling fat and happy, but I wanted to go classic for my main course so I ordered the steak frites. The steak was cooked just right at medium rare, served with a butter sauce, and a plentiful serving of crispy frites. Just perfect. I also tried bites of the beef bourguignon and the trout almondine which with are now on my list for my upcoming meals at Le Diplomate.

Steak Frites at Le Diplomate

Think we’re done? Not even close. For dessert we ordered the milk chocolate pot de crème and the apple tart tatin  with vanilla ice cream. The chocolate dessert was smooth and silky with crunchy bits and topped with whipped cream. While I enjoyed the apple tart, I expected it to be quite thin and flaky similar to what I have had in France, instead it was thick with huge chunks of apple. Still very good, just not what I had envisioned.

I must say I am pretty thrilled to have Le Diplomate just steps away from my home. It’s definitely going to become one of my staple spots, and there is so much more to try considering they are open for breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner. In fact, I am heading there for brunch this Sunday and am already eyeing the croque madame, quiche lorraine, and the array of egg dishes to choose from. I find myself longing for Paris regularly, and the atmosphere and food at Le Diplomate allows you to feel in that element, even if just for a few hours while enjoying a great meal.

Save D.C. Food Trucks

by Jenna on April 15, 2013

Screen Shot 2013-04-13 at 6.02.01 PMI am a big supporter of all forms of dining in the nation’s capital: high-end restaurants, local dive bars, neighborhood spots, and food trucks. I believe there is room for everyone– and they all bring something different and unique to the table. Recently, our food trucks have come under fire, and it’s important that we come together to support these hardworking small business owners to ensure that we continue to have variety and choice when it comes to our food. Mayor Vince Gray and the city have proposed new regulations which would limit the food trucks to specific zones which they are allowed to operate within, and would limit the amount of trucks allowed within those zones via a lottery system. If the trucks do not make the lottery, they can operate in other areas but have to abide by parking limitations that will essentially make it impossible for them to find viable spots to operate their businesses. Unfortunately, if the D.C. Council passes these regulations, it is possible many of these trucks will be unable to sustain their operations.

DCEmpanadas Truck

The Food Truck Association of Metropolitan Washington has banned together to create a movement where they are asking supporters to donate $5 to stand up for small business. This money will help them build the grassroots campaign needed to overturn these potential regulations and work to come up with new and better solutions. I encourage everyone to visit their new site SaveDCFoodTrucks.org, to sign the petition to join the fight. Additionally, Tweet out your support by using the hashtag #SaveDCFoodTrucks to join the conversation and create momentum. Finally, there have been some great pieces written by Tim Carman of the Washington Post and Jessica Sidman of the Washington City Paper about these proposed regulations and how they might negatively impact the food trucks, check them out here:

Let’s keep D.C. a city of choice, and a city that offers limitless options when it comes to food.

Blue Duck Tavern Terrace Party

by Jenna on April 12, 2013

Warm weather is finally upon us, and I was happy to be able to enjoy the beautiful evening last night on the terrace at Blue Duck Tavern at the Park Hyatt. Executive Chef Sebastien Archambault and Chef de Cuisine John Melfi prepared samples of new seasonal menu items that were colorful and tasty.

Spring Spread at BDT

There were salads being assembled by the Chefs themselves which included beautiful ingredients such as carrots, grapefruit, bibb lettuce, green goddess dressing and more. Additionally, the salmon with sorrel cream served with a coddled egg was beautifully plated and tasted lovely.

The passed hors d’oeuvres included a meaty jumbo lump crab cake with frisee and fennel topped with an aioli. I also enjoyed a bite of hangar steak, lamb, and some small pastries including one with rhubarb and a light crumble on top.

The terrace at Blue Duck Tavern is a perfect place to enjoy breakfast, brunch, lunch, or dinner. Pair your meal with a nice glass of rosé or one of their new spring cocktails such as the cilantro margarita, and you are destined to have a lovely day.

Restaurant News and Updates

by Jenna on April 10, 2013

A few key announcements and updates to the D.C. food scene have been made this week that are worth sharing:

  • Chef Mike Isabella announced this morning that he is opening a new restaurant in Edison, New Jersey in partnership with his sister called G GrabandGo. The restaurant will be styled like a deli and offer sandwiches, soups, salads, and more. This will be Isabella’s fifth restaurant concept following Graffiato and Bandolero which are currently open in Washington, D.C. and he also has Kapnos and G Sandwich opening in the District this spring/summer.
  • Table, one of Shaw’s newest and best restaurants has announced they will start offering brunch on April 20th. Brunch will be served on Saturdays and Sundays, and there is a $34 prix fixe menu which includes three courses. A few dishes that sound droolworthy: buckwheat crepes with caramelized pears, and glazed short ribs with eggs. Read my review of Table here.
  • Also from Chef Frederik de Pue of Table is his forthcoming restaurant Azur which is scheduled to open April 18th. The restaurant will take over the former Café Atlántico and America Eats Tavern space on 405 8th Street NW. Azur will be a European seafood restaurant, and the menu includes a raw bar, abundant fish and shellfish entrees, and fun bar food options such as uni toast and baked oysters.
  • Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken officially opened this week and can barely keep up with the demand! I am told there have been lines out the door most of the week, and they have been selling out quickly. I had a delicious preview of the doughnuts a few months back which you can read about here. They are located at 1308 G Street NW.
  • Now that it’s spring (or summer) in D.C., the patios are back in the full effect! I’m especially excited to hear that Bourbon Steak at the Four Seasons has opened their patio as of Monday. And, head over to the bar/lounge at Bourbon Steak sometime this month to celebrate National Grilled Cheese Month. There is a special grilled cheese available each week that is served from Sunday- Thursday from 11:30AM 10PM. This week is Cabot Clothbound Cheddar with onion jam on rye, next week is truffle Pecorino with foie gras butter on brioche, and the 21st-25th and 28th-30th is Raclette with dijon and cornichons on baguette.
  • Le Diplomate has soft opened, and I am looking forward to my dinner there next week on 4/17. I recently took a trip to Paris in December and have been anxiously awaiting the opening so I can indulge in croissants, steak frites, and beef bourguignon. I have a feeling that having this restaurant one block from my apartment is going to be dangerous. The restaurant is now accepting reservations (OpenTable keeps shifting between online and offline), and brunch will begin on Saturday, April 13th. This is the first restaurant to enter the Washington market from restaurateur Stephen Starr. Check out the amazing menu below.
